Academics & Arts

Performing & Visual Arts

Through art history, music theory, dance, drama, drawing, painting, photography, computer design and more, students leave Laurel with an appreciation for the arts and with the skills to enjoy the arts for the rest of their lives.

Performing Arts

The Performing Arts are an integral part of school days and after school at Laurel and a significant piece of the school’s legacy. Faculty encourage every student to discover her artistic passion and to develop her voice with confidence.
Balancing Process with Product
Our approach to the Performing Arts curriculum balances process with product. Emphasis is placed on building skills and making artistic choices. We encourage girls to embrace creative challenges and to think critically about the arts.

Cultural Exposure
We view the arts as opportunities to come to know a rich variety of cultures by exploring many types of music, dance and drama. We celebrate the interdisciplinary relationship among the Performing Arts.
Discovering Potential
In aspiring to help each girl at Laurel School fulfill her promise, the Performing Arts faculty is committed to bringing each girl to her full potential in each art form. Dance, Drama, General Music, Instrumental Music and Vocal Music are offered at every level, and each girl is encouraged to discover her passion. Through music theory, dance and drama technique and performance classes, students leave Laurel with an appreciation for the arts and with the skills to enjoy the arts for the rest of their lives.

Performing Arts Curriculum
See "Curricula & Faculty by Grade" for Performing Arts in Laurel School's K-Grade 2, Grades 3-5, and Grades 6-8; and "Explore our Curriculum" for Grades 9-12.

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts faculty guide girls through both traditional and contemporary applications of diverse mediums from printmaking to computer art. From a very early age, girls experiment with a variety of materials ranging from metals to ceramics to fabric culminating in an Upper School curriculum rich in creative expression.
Kindergarten through Fifth Grade
Girls learn about women artists throughout history and how women have been depicted in art over the years. Each grade level engages in arts immersion experiences and performances combining visual art, drama, music and dance.

Sixth through Eighth Grade
Working in the visual arts engenders girls to develop positive habits of mind--including perseverance, taking risks, thinking analytically, willingness to explore options and embrace revision as a part of the process.
Ninth through Twelfth Grades
In their visual arts courses, students experiment and utilize a variety of materials and techniques in pursuit of an authentic voice. As they create and evaluate art, students become independent thinkers who understand the principles of art, the elements of design, and the vocabulary and language of multiple media.
